Writing Time !!!

Writing is an essential part of  first grade. We have writing workshop four times a week. This is the time where the kids learn about small moment stories, letter writing, personal narratives, character study. In writing workshop the children will also learn about adding details, revising, and editing.

We also have a green writing journal where we spend about 10 minutes each day writing. Usually I give the children a prompt and they develop it into a short story. I always ask them to add detail and tell me why or what they are writing about. Once the children finish writing they have a chance to illustrate a picture.

Using the green writing journals is a wonderful opportunity to practice writing.

Independent Reading Time

Every morning I have the children read for about 15 minutes independently. During this time they can get their book baggies, choose new books, share something interesting they read, and practice reading. Starting this week I will be going around and conferencing with each child privately. During this time I will be able to better assess where your children's strengths and weaknesses are. This is also the perfect opportunity to practice comprehension skills.

Social Studies: Learning about the 7 Continents

In Social Studies we are currently learning about the 7 Continents. We have already covered the Continent of Asia. We explored China and Japan. We are now exploring the Continent of Africa. We have already learned about the Sahara Desert, and Kenya. The best part of exploring the 7 Continents are the Passports we are making in class. While learning about the Continents we explore various countries and we write about them in our Passports. The kids get to be creative, they draw pictures about the things they learn, and write small facts. The class is really enjoying this activity.
