Science Experiment #4: Sinking & Floating

In Science as we continue to explore Solids, Liquids, & Gases we are conducting a number of various experiments. One of the questions we asked was : How can we measure and observe properties? One of the ways is to see what sinks and what floats. The class conducted their own experiments with various objects to see what will sink and what will float.. Take a look :)

Learning about Place Value using Tens & Ones Manipulative's

In Math we are learning about Place Value. The First Grade had a great time exploring what a ten's column and one's column look like by using manipulative's.

Trip to The Intrepid Museum

On Wednesday, April 25th we are going on a trip to The Intrepid Museum in Manhattan. Our class will be participating in a workshop called:

Meet Alex the Ace! – K-2nd GradeWhat was it like be a pilot on Intrepid? Through historic photos, classes meet Alex, an Ace pilot who flew off the ship and discuss what a “day in the life” for crew members might be like. Students learn about other jobs on the ship and write or draw about jobs in their own communities.

We will be leaving school at 9:30am, and will return at around 1:00pm. Upon our return the children will have lunch. As always we will be taking water and snacks along with us. If any parent should have any questions or concerns please e-mail me: morahgaby@mazeldayschool.com

Thanks,

Writing "ALL ABOUT BOOKS"

Dear Parents,

I hope this e-mail finds everyone well. Before vacation I sent home a notice about a project we will be doing in Writing Workshop. We will be writing "All About Books." Each child has picked an animal they would like to write about and I asked that over the break you take your children to the library and get books on their particular animal. Almost everyone brought in books. Thank you so much for your help. However some of the children have still not brought in books or information. I am asking that tonight you please go on the Internet and retrieve as many facts/information about your child's animal as possible.  We will be starting to work on the "All About Book" tomorrow. If you sent in some printed information, your child still needs more. If you should have any questions please e-mail me: morahgaby@mazeldayschool.com

Thank you for your kind attention and all your efforts.

Example of an "All About Book"

Once we complete this Writing Unit I would like to have a publishing party. All parents are invited to come and celebrate in their child's accomplishment. When it gets closer to the time of the party all parents will receive an invitation. :)

Science Experiment #3: Changing It's Shape- Play Dough

In Science we have been spending a lot of time learning about Solids, Liquids, and Gases. To really learn about how solids, liquids, and gases really change and help us function our main focus to to perform a number of experiments. Experiment #3 was to change the shape of something that starts off as a liquid primarily. WE MADE COLORFUL PLAY DOUGH.. the kids had tons of fun making different shapes from the play dough..
